Things in international law are often incredibly hard to divine.  It’s a fair and open question — “colorable”, as a lawyer might say — whether the US military action in Iraq is legal or illegal under international law.  Jon Bonne of MSNBC — not a lawyer, but one of the smartest and most insightful people I’ve ever met and a former editor at CourtTV to boot — has done a nice job with the issues here in his piece on this topic.  Bonne gets the hard issues here right, in my view, especially the emphasis on the legitimacy point that Anne-Marie Slaughter raises and the enforcement issue (who’s going to take us to task?  where?  how?).
