Lewis Hyde — a professor at Kenyon College, MacArthur fellow, Berkman fellow, author of The Gift among other books — was here at for a lunchtime presentation on his work on the Commons. Prof. Jamie Boyle of Duke Law School showed up, too, as did former Berkman Center ED Eric Saltzman. As a writer and not a lawyer (are they mutually exclusive?), Hyde had a particularly interesting slant on how we think about property law, the notion of the public good and the like. He’s looking for a definition of the Commons. (Anybody have a good one?) It’s a terrific inquiry.
