I can’t believe that I didn’t get to talk to the famous Matt, who, it turns out, was at the Boston Public Library session on Freedom of Expression in the Digital Age on Thursday night. I’m grateful that he blogged it. Looks right to me.
The event was part of the New Center’s Words on Fire series running this Winter and Spring. The basic premise was, in part: if the Nazi regime had today’s Internet tools, how would the Berlin book burning have played out? The discussion was very lively. Much of the heat was generated by an exchange between Jonathan Zittrain and Andrew Tarsy of the Anti-Defamation League, over the list of sites blocked by HateFilter, ADL’s client-side filter for parents. The list of blocked sites is not revealed, which JZ takes issue with. There was also a fair amount of blog and Slashdot talk, which brought the at-least-in-part non-technical audience into the semantic tech world for a brief glimpse.
