Reading not too far into Derek’s post
about the recent i2hub lawsuits, I am pretty sure I know what he’s
getting at and if I’m right I agree with him wholeheartedly:
it’s a terrible idea to turn universities into the copyright
police, as the cops who are required to carry the water of copyright
holders. The DMCA does so, structurally, already. No doubt
we need to resolve the digital media crisis; it is a long way from
solved. Universities no doubt have a very important educational
role — and
universities ought to play that role far better than they (we?) do —
but not, properly, an enforcement role of the sort that they (we?) are being
thrust into.
