Cyberspace -> blogosphere?

I wonder if the blogosphere is the post-2000 version what we used to call cyberspace in the mid-to-late 1990s?

If so — or even if not — should we concern ourselves with the issue that as soon as the space, or the technology, (depending on your view) gets too popular, too mainstream, too commercial, it loses its edge?  Now that google, Terra-Lycos, even Harvard (my goodness!) is into the act, and people are asking if you can make $$ doing it, is it all down hill?  I’m beginning to think that’s the fate of good technologies (or interesting spaces): they inevitably become the victims of their own successes.  As an inexperienced blogger, I’m not one to talk.
